'Over 300 participants found their way into the Nowe Horyzonty Cinema to join the European Conference in Wrocław, European Capital of Culture 2016. The conference was planned in close collaboration with the city of Wrocław, and it aimed to draw attention to the active participation of cities and regions within the European integration process.

Mayor Rafał Dutkiewicz opened the conference with the words “Instead of asking What is Polish? we should ask What is Europe?” Quoting Cardinal Kominek he claimed: “Europe is our future, nationalism is out of date!”

On the second day, representatives from upcoming European Capitals of Culture were discussing about how the programmes elaborated during the application phase could have a sustainable effect even if the candidate city was not selected. The idea arouse to establish an office in Wrocław that would connect past and upcoming Capitals of Culture in a network.

A young perspective on the topics was given by eleven young Europeans from Germany, Poland, UK and the Czech Republic. Under the supervision of Rarita Zbranca, Andreas Bock and Nicolas Bertrand, members of the “A Soul for Europe” Strategy Group, they shared their thoughts and ideas about the role of European cities and presented them during the panel discussions.'
